Seven Questions to Ask Before Hiring a Painting Contractor

December 18, 2014

Before you entrust your home decorating job to a painting contractor, here are seven questions you should ask:

1. How long has the painting company been in business?

It is always better to go with a painting company that has been in business for at least 5 years. There is an obvious reason for this...  any company that has been in business for a number of years must be providing great service simply because if they were NOT, over time their reputation would become known, and they would run out of customers.  Word of mouth spreads fast, and in today's wired world, a bad review is broadcast throughout social media at the speed of light.  And, as research has shown time and time again, people are much more likely to spread a bad review than a good one.

Grant Painting Group has been providing interior and exterior painting services to commercial and residential customers in Hamilton, Oakville and Burlington for over 30  years, so you can rest assured that our service is always of the highest quality.

2. Do they offer a warranty and are they insured?

Any respectable painting contractor will provide a warranty on their work. Grant Painting Group warrants labour and material for a period of two years. If paint failure appears, we will supply labor and materials to correct the condition without cost.

Also, all of our painters are fully insured by the WSIB and we carry $5 million dollars in liability insurance in order to protect customers in the event of accident or injury.

3. Do they use sub-contractors?

It is important that painting companies do not use sub-contractors because they sometimes are unskilled and unprofessional painters. If you receive a rather low painting estimate from a company, most times the reason is because they have inexperienced workers on the job. The success of Grant Painting Group can be attributed to every employee focusing on the three main aspects we deal with on a daily basis: the Customer, the Job, and the Employees.

4. Can the painting company provide references?

Before working with any painting contractor, it is a good idea to check some of their past references. Grant Painting Group has numerous positive reviews posted on our website:

5. Do they keep a clean work place?

Experienced painting contractors understand it is important to keep your home neat and clean.  At the end of every day, the painters at Grant Painting Group take the time to clean up all the areas in which they worked.

6. What brands of paint do they use?

Be sure to use a painter that uses professional quality paint from name brand stores like Benjamin Moore, and Sherwin-Williams. Lower quality paints can dull over time.

7. How much wall prep is included in the estimate?

Always verify that the proper wall preparation is performed prior to painting. Some painting companies do not take the time to properly prep walls. This can cause premature peeling and cracking. Grant Painting Group prepares the surfaces carefully, knowing that prep work is the most important part of any paint job.
